When Mendel's work went public

چکیده
his revolutionary account of inheritance in 1865, his work remained almost unknown until the beginning of the last century. A pioneer in this turnaround was William Bateson, a Cambridge botanist, who had come across the paper and was impressed by the implications of its contents. Spurred by a meeting on plant hybridisation and breeding backed by Britain's Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in 1899, he then went further and presented Mendel's work in a lecture to a meeting of RHS fellows in 1900. This led to the publication of an English translation of Mendel's original paper in the society's journal in 1901 (see right). The work both shocked and amazed gardeners and the scientific establishment and inspired the RHS to back further work to look into Mendel's results. A new laboratory was planned at the society's garden at Wisley, in southeast England, which opened in 1907. But was Bateson's choice of first announcement of Mendel's work in English to the RHS a coincidence? Simon Thornton-Wood, the present RHS head of science, advice and archives, thinks not. Practical gardeners " were the most likely of any group of natural scientists to appreciate the ideas of simple, particulate inheritance, " he says. Mendel revealed: Cambridge botanist William Bateson presents Mendel's research on the inheritance of plant characteristics to British gardeners a century ago. Those learning of his results were 'shocked and amazed' by his conclusions. It's 100 years since Mendel's landmark work on genetic inheritance finally achieved a major public exposure: to Britain's society of serious gardeners. Nigel Williams reports.

Problems of Heredity as a Subject for Horticultural Investigation
Mendel's work from 1865 was largely neglected, until 1900 when it was simultaneously rediscovered by Hugo de Vries, Carl Correns, and Erik von Tschermak. When Mendel's work came to the attention of William Bateson (who himself had already been advocating controlled crosses as an approach to studying heredity), he was convinced that Mendel's work was of major importance: That we are in the prese...

Remember the monk and the peas? The story introduced school children to genetics long before the human genome made the evening news. The Augustinian monk Gregor Mendel conducted hundreds of experiments on the edible pea, crossing peas that were smooth or wrinkled, peas that grew tall or short, peas that had white or violet flowers. He found that the results of these crosses were predictable, an...

GREGOR MENDEL read his paper Versuche iiber Pflanzenhybriden (Experiments in Plant Hybridization) at two sessions of the Natural History Society of Briinn, now Brno, in February and March 1865. The two lectures were published in Volume IV of the Verhandlungen des Naturforschenden Vereins in Briinn and we shall refer to them as 'Transactions' (1866). It is well known that only thirty-four years ...
متن کاملThe Mendelian Revolution. The Emergence of Hereditarian Concepts in Modern Science and Society
Both historians and scientists campaign under the banner of objectivity in the academic search for truths. Their paths seldom cross-historians look back, scientists look in-but, in recent years, historians of science have begun to make quite a stir, questioning whether the scientific claim to objectivity has a basis in historical reality. Peter J. Bowler operates from such a premise in this sho...

Gregor Mendel's classic paper, Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden (Experiments on Plant Hybrids), was published in 1866, hence 2016 is its sesquicentennial. Mendel completed his experiments in 1863 and shortly thereafter began compiling the results and writing his paper, which he presented in meetings of the Natural Science Society in Brünn in February and March of 1865. Mendel owned a personal co...
